International Medical Graduates
General Information for International Medical Graduates Wishing To Practice Medicine in Australia
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) or former overseas medical students (that is persons who were not an Australian citizen or permanent resident when they commenced study for their medical degree in Australia) can come to Australia on either a temporary basis or a permanent basis.
Rules regarding the registration of International Medical Graduates differ depending on:
- Immigration status, that is permanent or temporary;
- Whether the primary medical qualification was obtained in New Zealand; and
- The requirements of the Australian State and Territory medical registration authorities.
CPMEC does not have any role to play in regard to facilitating the entry of medical practitioners to Australia (permanent or temporary) or obtaining registration to practise medicine.
